  • What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. It infects the genital area, lips, mouth, or anus of both men and women. You usually get syphilis from sexual contact with someone who has it. It can also pass from mother to baby during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of Syphilis?

The early stage of syphilis usually causes a single, small, painless sore. Sometimes it causes swelling in nearby lymph nodes. If you do not treat it, syphilis usually causes a non-itchy skin rash, often on your hands and feet. Many people do not notice symptoms for years. Symptoms can go away and come back.
The sores caused by syphilis make it easier to get or give someone HIV during sex. If you are pregnant, syphilis can cause birth defects, or you could lose your baby. In rare cases, syphilis causes serious health problems and even death.

What should I do if I suspect some of the above symptoms?

PRECAUTIONS The Syphilis test should be stored at room temperature 4-30oC (40-86oF). The test device is sensitive to humidity as well as to heat. Perform the test immediately after removing the test device from the foil pouch. Do not use it beyond the expiration date.

    CONTENTS

The Syphilis test kit contains the following items to perform the test: Syphilis test device, Lancet, Buffer bottle, Blood collection tube (Dropper), Desiccant and Instructions. The desiccant is for storage purposes only, and is not used in the test procedures.

    PROCEDURE OF THE TEST

    1. Remove the test disk from the foil pouch, and place it on a flat, dry surface. Note: Once the test disk is removed from the pouch, it should be used as soon as possible.

    2. Identify the desired puncture site (shaded area) and make sure it is properly cleansed/disinfected.

    3. Twist off tab to break the seal and discard.

    4. Position safety lancet firmly against puncture site as illustrated.Hold safety lancet between fingers.

    5. To activate, press safety lancet firmly against the puncture site. Do not remove the device form the site until an audible click is heard.

    6. Massage near the site to obtain blood flow. The lancet needle will retract safely after use. Dispose of the lancet in a suitable container.

    7. Fill the dropper with the blood sample.

    8. Open the buffer bottle and hold it upside down. Add 2 drops of extraction solution buffer liquid to the blood sample in the dropper and mix.

    9. Holding the dropper bottle above the test disk. Squeeze 2 drops of specimen into the sample well.

    10. As the test begins to work, you will see purple color dyes move across the Result Window in the center of the test disk.

    11. Interpret test results at 10 minutes. Do not interpret test results after 15 minutes.

Caution: The above interpretation time is based on reading the test results at room temperature of 15 to 30 degrees C. If your room temperature is significantly lower than 15 degrees C, then the interpretation time should be properly increased.

    INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

    1. A color band will appear at the left section of the Result Window to show that the test is working properly. This band is the Control Band (“C” band).

    2. The right section of the Result Window indicates the test results. If another color band appears at the right section of the Result Window it is the Test Band (“T” band).

    Positive Result:

The presence of two color bands (“T” and “C” bands) within the result window regardless of which band appears first indicates a positive result. Note: Generally, the higher the amount of antibodies in the specimen, the stronger the “T” band color will be. When the amount of antibodies is close to but still within the sensitivity limit of the test, the color of the “T” band will be very faint.

    Negative Result:

The presence of only one purple color band (“C” band), within the Result Window, indicates a negative result. Invalid: If after performing the test, no color band is visible within the Result Window, the result is considered invalid. Some causes of invalid results are not following the directions correctly or the test may have deteriorated beyond the expiration date.

    Limitations of the Test:

Although the BodyTest Syphilis Test is very accurate in detecting Syphilis, a low incidence of false results can occur. Other clinically available tests are required if questionable results are obtained. As with all diagnostic tests, a definitive clinical diagnosis should not be based on the results of a single test, but should only be made by the physician after all clinical and laboratory findings have been evaluated.

    Warnings

    1. The lancet needle should be used for one person only and should not be shared with another person, because the used needle is a biohazard.

    2. Decontaminate and dispose of all specimens, reaction kits, lancet needles and potentially contaminated materials, as if they were infectious wastes, in a biohazard container.

    3. Do not use the kit after the expiration date.

    4. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
