  • What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
There are various different 'strains' of this germ, and unfortunately antibiotic-resistant ones have become more common during the 21st century.
The disease most frequently affects 15 to 35-year-olds.
Please note that gonorrhoea (the clap) is more common in many other regions of the world, particularly parts of the tropics. Therefore, casual sex while overseas may be risky.

    How do you contract gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is transmitted through sexual contact. This includes vaginal intercourse and anal intercourse.
Oral sex can also pass on the germ, and some people actually develop a sore throat due to gonorrhoeal infection. But sex workers and others may carry the bacterium in their throats without realising it.
A research paper, to be presented at a VD conference in Newcastle in May 2011, reveals that there's a high incidence of gonorrhoea of the throat among prostitutes because so many of them give oral sex several times per day.
Mothers infected with gonorrhoea can transfer the disease to their children during delivery. If they were untreated, such children would develop a serious inflammation of the eyes – which could result in blindness.

What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea?

Of those infected, approximately half the women and a few of the men do not show any symptoms.
In men, the main symptom is painful urination. There's also a discharge from the tip of the penis, which may be white, yellow or green.
Gonorrhoea in the rectum can occur in people who practice anal intercourse.
This may be symptom-free. But it can give you rectal pain, irritation or a discharge from the anus.
In women, the symptoms of gonorrhoea are more limited or absent. But there may be painful urination and a discharge from the vagina.
In both sexes, a throat infection can occur as a result of oral sex with an infected partner. Sometimes the sore throat is accompanied by a fever. However, there may be no symptoms at all.

What happens if gonorrhoea is left untreated?

If gonorrhoea is left untreated it can develop into an inflammation of the sexual organs in women and in men an inflammation of the epididymis (a tightly-coiled tube located next to the testicle) or other parts of the genitals.
In women, a possible long-term consequence of gonorrhoea is blockage of the Fallopian tubes, even if the person has never had any symptoms.
If this blockage happens, the passage of the fertilised egg into the uterus is made difficult and so the risk of sterility and ectopic pregnancy increases.
Women may also develop acute salpingitis – a painful inflammation of the Fallopian tube.
So, gonorrhoea should always be treated promptly.

REQUIREMENTS Clean and dry level surface and the BodyTest Gonorrhea

    PROCEDURE OF THE TEST

Test must be in room temperature (18ºC to 30ºC) .

    1. Man: Swab discharge from the opening of the urinary tract.

Woman: Swab discharge from the vaginal opening, then

insert swab into vagina for half a minute and retrieve the swab.

    2. Place the swab into the extraction tube and add  6 drops Buffer liquid A on the swab, rotate swab and squeeze.

Discard the swab into a disinfectant container.

    3. Now add 2 drops Buffer liquid B into the extraction tube and mix well. Specimen collected in the diluent should be stored

at 4-8 ˚C and tested within 24 hours.

    4. Open the sealed pouch by tearing along the notch.Remove the test device from the pouch, and place it on a flat, dry surface.

The follwoing the Pictorial Representation :

    INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

    1. A color band will appear at the left section of the Result Window to show that the test is working properly. This band is the Control Band (“C” band).

    2. The right section of the Result Window indicates the test results. If another color band appears at the right section of the Result Window it is the Test Band (“T” band).

Positive Result: The presence of two color bands (“T” and “C” bands) within the result window regardless of which band appears first indicates a positive result. Note: Generally, the higher the amount of antibodies in the specimen, the stronger the

“T” band color will be. When the amount of antibodies is close to but still within the sensitivity limit of the test, the color of the

“T” band will be very faint.

Negative Result: The presence of only one purple color band (“C” band), within the Result Window, indicates a negative  result.

Invalid: If after performing the test, no color band is visible within the Result Window, the result is considered invalid. Some causes of invalid results are not following the directions correctly or the test may have deteriorated beyond the expiration date.

    Limitations of the Test:

Although the BodyTest Gonorrhea Test is very accurate in detecting Gonorrhea, a low incidence of  false results can occur. Other clinically available tests are required if questionable results are obtained. As with all

diagnostic tests, a definitive clinical diagnosis should not be based on the results of a single test, but should only be made by the physician after all clinical and laboratory findings have been evaluated.

    Warnings

    1. The test should be used for one person only and should not be shared with another person.

    2. Decontaminate and dispose of all specimens, reaction kits, lancet needles and potentially contaminated materials, as if they were infectious wastes, in a biohazard container.

    3. Do not use the kit after the expiration date.

    4. For in vitro diagnostic use only. This kit is for external use only. Do not swallow.
